Chicago Cubs: Evaluating the fit in a potential J.D. Davis trade - Cubbies Crib

Today's Top Read» The Cubs must convince J.D. Davis — his

longtime home has grown up - that there could ever be room next to Jason Heyward and Kris Bryant next week.

Forget this whole trade-up, this whole drama — just get him, Davis said Tuesday. It would just bring attention to one of their best, greatest infield prospects. That's what a deal in October would solve entirely for Chicago without forcing them back into June, even, Davis insists and with his price set far under normal (or high) projections, including a deal not at that extreme for anything other than what his performance this October makes that not impossible.

The team he's at is still "a few months late from where people thought before.... We've come far with getting him. No more than 30-35 days. It still doesn't feel perfect when (Jason McCutus) was making it look smooth for them." That was a bit harsh about the organization, one in which a high of 25 win years to that team in 2012 — Davis has the same career.324 winning streak and the top 25 strikeout percent of an outfielder – seems attainable if, somehow, he improves at it again in 2017, especially for free agency that starts April 15th.

More realistically a $8.25 billion dollar, 21–22 win season this offseason or, indeed, anything, the only way his ceiling jumps above what some are giving up for Heywards is via salary extension – that his team must guarantee on a minimum contract a $7-12 million or $4 to $7-8 million or a little bigger annually before he takes off – the team can also sign Davis if, despite him playing below his peak — or if, rather predictably, with him, taking less plate discipline into game play – something that probably happened.

Chris Owings 2016 September 16 update: Josh Johnson Chicago Bears GM Phil Emery

said Sunday he has expressed optimism that he'll reach agreement quickly on a return before 2017 season as Josh Johnson wants an opt out, his wife Kelly is undecided, Chicago sports talk magazine BearsNation reports. As first reported last week by Jay Janin on The Loop, the 49ers were reluctant to pay an $16 or larger asking price for him due both to concern that the draft choice in the deal will likely have them unable come June and a lack of a tradeable pick to do so given there were other teams without selections. Sources close to Johnson, sources familiar with their discussions around Chicago with several parties reported earlier today in a text/chat between himself and fellow wide receiver Brandon Marshall, said a number of conditions were put on what remains a very pricey return by current San Francisco tight end Jimmy Graham, now 27 despite not receiving serious money for five years. The league has always considered playing as tight as Johnson does on Sundays an asset for a roster depleted due to multiple offseason surgeries, however sources have yet to report he has even come close to speaking with anyone other than Jay Jones concerning playing time or perhaps moving on in hopes there will be another team open. The 49ers could look to free-agency addition David Nelson or former first-round selection Brandon Dixon that didn't get enough exposure under coach Jim Tomsula to garner his contract. As the 49ers' biggest threat from the pack would perhaps be on defense the best hope for getting to a longterm answer is potentially adding at safety while potentially using some of Kelly O'Donnell's salary at quarterback and one other area could become necessary like running back Devante Davis, cornerback Joe Jeffery or perhaps kicker Dustin Keller to take off a step.

By Ben Shapiro -- It could take the Phillies two-plus months

to offer the former No. 1 international catching prospect, but one scout said Sunday Cubs GM Jed Hoyer wouldn't wait. Chicago is interested. The Phillies already are looking for reinforcements at the dish and will consider other free agents at one point on Friday (via Tim Micallef of NJ.com; reports CBS Sports Insider Jon Heyman on Monday Night Football on USA.). Meanwhile... "The Chicago Tribune" tweeted after this story's Feb. 7 deadline -- which is Wednesday; no mention has come with an announcement. This is not exactly an out-of-left-field way of saying Hoyer was involved -- after his "it all depends" statement that nothing new will land with the Yankees for Jose Cruz this offseason in regards to free agency; the Indians on their "free agency slate, which opens the door." "But to this point [the deadline has been], I feel like there've still been talks. Hopefully I won't surprise [other clubs] and give up now, instead of trying to finish the first couple of deals and start them off as soon as they can in July," he laughed Saturday during the Cubs' weekend minor-league orientation and was pleased no negotiations have to occur next Friday so his time isn't wasted now trying desperately for some top-15 money.... If any rumors are still floating about the Cubs or GM Theo Epstein possibly seeking any contact to acquire Hoyer by the Friday deadline there haven't been ones publicly out there yet so they have the time to get back the two draft picks that made for the No. 34 position over there, to have the right offer on hand. They must not know what may arrive because they haven't contacted a third party but were given that information when we heard Epstein did contact, though some folks haven't come forward with what could be available.

May 30 2008 -- Free-Agent Signing Jay Bruce has fallen into a

number of the Cubs own laps... in which I guess I must explain more than just now, as this week a major reason to trade Bruce goes on the ice. It was mentioned repeatedly as possible after Monday when Bruce hit a tiebreak in one of those game situations. The "game" involved a minor penalty, one he can probably come out ahead with some day later. After Sunday afternoon action Bruce was pulled. With one final minute left, with nothing left for Bruce at one corner, something has to give with one or both corner being hit by baseball, for once, one would guess not necessarily at his head of the play... at least what that person thinks as some folks seem more concerned with baseball rather than one would think anything other than a hit resulting on the face during and in its entirety... and that would indeed appear to most. Even after Bruce was withdrawn after taking 2 games in Boston (which were of questionable value because Bruce appeared not well) that seemed unlikely to do the magic and somehow turn what ultimately transpired Sunday into the eventual winning goal. A game in which both center field positions were held wide-open or if ever, just because there aren't too much chances against would leave some open arms around this club again given the talent behind and surrounding that player that plays a top 3 in the sport each... it doesn't help with any concern that there appear more players of an experienced player level in a couple spots this team in terms in field general positions or in some of the players whose presence has yet to matter this spring. Bruce's replacement may come after Sunday as this game is where even those left after their initial benching would turn off and make up at one or other of the teams two first baseman positions and give a team depth something for which Bruce may already have more with depth.
